General Rules to follow when using Social Marketing

Social marketing can be extremely powerful when used correctly but if you use it incorrectly then you could find yourself suspended from some of the most powerful tools at your disposal in terms of internet marketing. It is therefore important to ensure that you are doing social marketing correctly. Here are a few rules you should follow when using social marketing to promote your website.

Only Market on Social Media Websites that Allow This

Social media websites are not just used for marketing, and some of these websites may actually strictly prohibit any commercial use of their website (e.g. 43things). It is therefore important to ensure that the way you use these websites is in line with what is permitted and do not try to sell anything on a social media website that does not permit you to do so.

Remember that Social Media Websites are for Socializing

Another rule to bear in mind when using social media websites is that these websites are specifically for online socializing. Although they have become very powerful in terms of marketing you should still follow this rule by not using content that is too “salesy” but that is informative and that people will enjoy reading.

Read the Terms of Each Social Media Website Carefully

Before using any website you should know the terms for using their website and follow these religiously or you may find your account cancelled.

Be Sociable

This will mean different things on different websites but try to think of the purpose of each website you belong to and work in line with that. Social bookmarking websites, for example, want you to share valuable content you come across with others and this means that you should be sociable and share sites other than your own as well. Social networking sites want you to make friends and communicate with one another so use it to meet people, find old friends and share your life story. Always follow the general practices of each website that you are using.

These are the basic rules that you should be following for any social media website you belong to if you want to be able to market on them on a long term basis (or want to avoid having your account suspended.) If you follow these rules you will find that you are able to get a lot better results on a more long-term basis from these websites.
